The hotel sector in Spain received 7.8 million tourists in September, 66.3% more than in the same month of 2021. Total expenditure reached 9,243 million euros, which represents an increase of 83% over the previous year (€5,051).
During the first nine months of 2022, the total expenditure of international tourists increased by 209.7% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 68,137 million euros. Thus, the average expenditure per tourist amounts to 1,182 euros, with an annual increase of 10%. The average daily expenditure grew by 22.4% to 169 euros.
Main destinations: By Autonomous Community
The Autonomous Community of main destination with the greatest weight in tourist expenditure in September was the Balearic Islands, with 22.8% of the total and an increase in expenditure of 61.3%. In second place was Catalonia, with 20.2% of the total and an increase in spending of 135%. And lastly, the Canary Islands, 13.9% and an increase of 52.8%.
The Balearic Islands is also the top destination for the hotel sector in September, with 24.3% of the total. It is followed by Catalonia (21.1%) and Andalusia (14.3%).
Expenditure items: Growth in the hotel sector
Spending on activities is the main item in September, with 20.6% of total spending and an increase of 75.0% compared to the same month in 2021.
The following items are expenditure on package holidays and expenditure on international transport (not included in package holidays), with 19.9% and 18.0% of the total, respectively. The former increased by 123.3% in annual rate and the latter by 106.7%.
Types of accommodation and reasons for trips
Of the total tourist expenditure in September, 70.3% was made by tourists staying overnight in tourist accommodation. This translates into an annual increase of 93% in favour of the hotel sector. On the other hand, spending by tourists who do not travel with a package tour (which represents 71.3% of the total) rose by 70.2% in annual terms. Spending by package tourists increased by 124.8%.
In terms of the reason for the trip, tourists visiting Spain for leisure generated 87.4% of the total expenditure in the hotel sector (with a disbursement 80.5% higher than in September 2021).
Stages of trips and overnight stays
The stages of the trips made by international tourists in September grew by 65.4% in annual rate. 22.0% were made in Catalonia (with an increase of 92.7%). For its part, the total number of overnight stays made by international tourists in all types of accommodation (hotels, flats, own home, home of relatives or friends, rented accommodation…) stands at over 54.8 million, with an increase of 49.5%. Illes Balears is the Community with the most overnight stays (with nearly 12.1 million, 43.5% more than in September 2021). It is followed by Comunitat Valenciana (with 9.7 million and an increase of 37.6%) and Catalonia (with more than 9.4 million, an increase of 92.6%).
